This past Friday, with the help of my amazing band, I fulfilled a long-time dream. After two years of scheming, planning and arranging, the JPQ debuted 8 new arrangements of tunes from Nick Drake’s debut album “Five Leaves Left”.

Josh, Evan, D’Vonne and I were joined by our dear friends Cynthia Mullis on tenor and Michele Khazak on vocals. I’m so thrilled how excited everyone was to play this music, and the arrangements worked out beautifully. I knew that this music was perfectly suited for this collection of musicians, and they proved me right yet again!

We played to a standing-room-only crowd at Lucid Jazz Lounge and even signed a bunch of CDs during the set breaks! The music was received so well and the whole night was truly magical. After so much thought and hard work it was truly gratifying to see it all come to fruition so perfectly.

I’ve put together a video montage of clips from many of the songs we played, including “Three Hours”, “Cello Song”, “Day Is Done”, “Time Has Told Me” and “River Man”. I hope you dig it!

My lovely wife took some amazing photos at the show, which are posted here.

We will be recording this material sometime before the end of the year and will have a new album out in 2011 called “Five Leaves Left: A Jazz Tribute To Nick Drake”. I’ll keep you posted on our progress. We’ll definitely play this music live a few times before then, so if you missed the debut never fear, you’ll have more chances to hear this gorgeous music live soon.

Here’s a review of the night and of Lucid that was written by a new friend of mine: “A Lucid Night of Jazz”. Thanks Michelle!

This is perfect! A dream fulfilled for my husband and me – Nick Drake in jazz! Hope you’ll play in Europe someday! The trumpet is extraordinary! (Miles Davis came to my “ear” instantly!)

Will surely get the album! Best of luck!

Daria
