I’ve been following Mike Masnick ever since I first saw his presentation at MIDEM about Trent Resnor’s success with direct-to-fan marketing. The way he states the formula is the way I have been operating since I dove into the blogging/tweeting/social networking world:

Connect With Fans (CwF) + Reason To Buy (RtB) = The Business Model ($$$$)

Masnick is a smart guy and I’ve really grown to appreciate his take on things, which is why I was super excited when he wrote and asked me to share my experiences with the “Pay-What-You-Want” model I’ve been using for selling CDs and playing gigs.

Today Masnick profiled my exploits with PWYW in this article on his site, Techdirt.com. Give it a read and let me know what you think. There’s already some pointed comments from both sides of the fence!

Thanks to Mike for taking the time to hear my story and write about it. You can check out more of his thoughts here.

I also just received a very nice email from a Techdirt reader:

“I just read an article about you on Techdirt, and let me say bravo! For so many years, we’ve been hearing about how the internet is killing musician’s ability to make money, but that was never the case. The internet is a new medium of connecting with your fans and potential fans, and it’s so refreshing to read how people (albeit very few) are finally realizing it’s potential. And with all the people out there who haven’t heard of your music yet, what a wonderful way of trying before buying – definitely a positive way of creating and cultivating a super loyal fan base. Reading about your experimentation excites me and I hope that more musicians continue trying to experiment in different ways to connect and give their fans something different. Although I may not be a fan of your music, I would definitely recommend you and explain your story when the topic comes up in conversation.

Best of luck in everything you do, congratulations with everything you’ve done, and thank you!

Hi Jason,

This is so true! The internet is really helping us in so many ways, and not killing music like people have been saying! I posted a video on this topic from ted.com on my blog, http://geraldineinabottle.blogspot.com/2010/10/how-internet-is-helping-performing-arts.html

Thanks for sharing about techdirt!
Geraldine
