Makin’ it Happen – How Artists Make Money on NPR’s All Things Considered

Every Friday on this blog is “Makin’ it Happen Friday”, where I feature another musician who’s found a way to make a living playing music. I am constantly inspired by others, and hope to pass that inspiration on to you.

OK, so this week our feature is not actually one musician. But my fiance hipped me to this series and I wanted to share it with you today.

NPR’s “All Things Considered” is airing a special series called “How Artists Make Money”. It’s an in-depth look at how artists in many different disciplines are makin’ it happen for themselves. So far they have featured musicians (including The Posies), authors, dancers, actors, playwrights, poets and painters.

It’s interesting to see that many of the issues facing musicians are similar to those facing other types of artists. We all need to answer the art vs. commerce question, find ways to earn money that are both directly and indirectly related to our art, and foster communication and cooperation within our respective communities.

I highly recommend checking out some of the audio pieces. They are entertaining, informative and inspiring – everything I hoped my “Makin’ it Happen” feature would be.
