Jason Parker Quartet - No More No Less

I met Phil Freeman on Twitter and have been following his Tweets for a few months now. Phil is an author, critic and journalist that writes about all kinds of music for a few different publications, including Burning Ambulance. I was thrilled when I received a message from him telling me that he was going to review a different independent jazz release every day in the month of May and asking me to send him my CD “No More, No Less” by the Jason Parker Quartet for review.

I was also a little apprehensive when I read this disclaimer in his post about the project:

Before the impression that this is some kind of charity effort sinks in too deeply, let me state unequivocally that positive reviews are not guaranteed. This is about a level playing field, not affirmative action.

The review showed up yesterday, and I couldn’t be more pleased! Phil obviously took the time to listen to the whole disc and his observations are spot-on (except that I happen to like Josh’s opening statement on “Mance’s Dance”!).

Perhaps the coolest thing he said is that we are “musicians who know each other well enough to realize that jazz is a team sport, not a battle royal.” The JPQ has been together for 3 years now (a rarity in jazz) and I like to think that we’ve developed a real group sound and conception to our playing. Nice to know that others can hear it too.

Also pretty cool that he compares me to Lee Morgan and Miles Davis. What trumpet player wouldn’t like that?!?!

You can read the full review here. Be sure to read all the other reviews too…you’ll surely be turned on to some great music you haven’t heard before!

Thanks to Phil for the great idea, and for helping out us indie jazz artists who are making a go of it on our own. This kind of support is invaluable and greatly appreciated.
