The man we call EFB

Evan Flory-Barnes is one of the most inspiring cats I know. His bass playing and musical depth are astounding, and he has an incredible ability to draw in the listener every time he plays. Sharing the stage with him for the last 3+ years has been a joy and has made me a better musician.

But that’s only half the story. Evan is also one of the most thoughtful and dedicated human beings I know. He is a true seeker and is on a continuing quest to live a deliberate life. He is full of love for humanity, and that’s not a platitude. He walks the walk and talks the talk. That in itself is truly inspiring. If you want to get to know Evan as a person check out the video called “Uncovering the Love” at the bottom of this post.

I met up with EFB the other day at Lucid Jazz Lounge before The Hang and asked him to talk about his relationship to Nick Drake’s music and his thought on our upcoming tribute recording.

Thank you Evan for your continued presence in the JPQ and in my life.

BONUS VIDEO: I had to post this here too. This is a live performance of the Nick Drake tune “Three Hours” that the JPQ did at a masterclass at Cal. State University, Bakersfield on our Spring tour. This is the performance that Evan references in the above video. I agree with him that this was a turning point for the band. With this performance, everything clicked, and we jumped to a new level as a group. Sadly, Evan is on the very edge of the picture, but his bass solo is astounding. I was actually crying by the end. My reaction at the end of the tune was genuine!

First of all, I love being introduced to inspiring “cats.” Very cool. Second, I want to come out to one of these shows! Maybe they can grease the doors so I can ease myself inside so baby can enjoy some jazz! See you guys tonight! xo

You are hilarious, redmenace! We’ll be happy to grease up the doors of Lucid for you on Dec. 21! We’ll be playing all the Nick Drake songs that night as our last “dress rehearsal” before hitting the studio on the 26th.
